Outside the Bachs

The Outside the Bachs competition for choral composers is presented in an effort to encourage fresh, innovative choral writing.  The competition is held in a concert format.  Five pieces chosen by a screening committee are performed by Choral Union.  An adjudicating panel of distinguished musicians selects First Prize.  The audience also has an opportunity to vote for its choice.  The next competition will have its concert presentation in 2012.

• Must be an original sacred work (not necessarily Christian) for SATB (divisi acceptable). 
• A cappella or keyboard accompaniment (piano or organ).  For a cappella works, please include a keyboard reduction.
• May include one obbligato instrument.  In the case of ethnic percussion, up to three instruments.
• Texts must be by the composer or in the public domain.  If the text is neither, it MUST be accompanied by the written consent of the author.
• Text may be in a language other than English, but it must be accompanied by an English translation.
• The submitted work must NOT have been performed or recorded prior to the competition.  Outside the Bachs 2008 MUST host the premiere of the work.  (a midi sample may be sent in with score)
• The work shall be no longer than six minutes.
• Scores will NOT be returned.  We prefer that the scores are not bound.  One staple or paperclip will suffice.  We also prefer scores be submitted in portrait format rather than landscape.
• Please include a cover sheet with all contact information.  For the integrity of the competition, DO NOT put your name anywhere on the score.
• Each composer may submit one piece only.
• No age restrictions.
• Members of FUMC-Fort Worth and their immediate families are NOT eligible.
